금번 450명의 IT 전문가를 대상으로 한 조사에 따르면, 26 부문의 IT 기술 부문에서 스토리지 만 유일 하게 조금이나마 성장 (1% 이하) 하는 부문으로 조사 되었으며, 다른 하드웨어 부문은 2~3% 마이너스 성장 하는 걸로 나타났습니다.

특히 예산 축소에 따른 IT 조직의 금년 목표는 기존 자산에 대한 효율적 사용에 촛점이 맞춰 질 수 밖에 없기 때문에 가상화 부문이 업계에 영향을 주는 가장 강력한 부문으로 주목 받게 될 것입다.

A new study covering planned expenditures across 26 technology categories including hardware, software and services, shows storage as the only category poised for overall growth in 2009. In addition, virtualization emerged as the key trend impacting the industry, as organizations focus on achieving IT goals through squeezing efficiencies from reduced budgets. The survey, conducted among 450 IT professionals in the U.S. and UK was a collaborative effort between Millward Brown, Research International, and Lightspeed Research to leverage the perspectives of LinkedIn members via the LinkedIn Research Network. While overall spending on Storage was only expected to increase by a marginal amount (less then 1%), this is in stark contrast to other hardware categories which showed declines between 2-3%. Steve Ingledew, Managing Director of Millward Brown's Technology Practice observed, "In times of recession, there is a heightened need to protect what you have and in many ways, storage is to technology what insurance is to financial services; with data increasing exponentially and with the appetite for risk low, this is an area in which you simply don't want to compromise."When asked about the key challenges facing them in the coming year, technology decision makers cited "meeting the same or similar objectives with lower IT budgets," with 55% and 63% of mid-market and enterprise decision makers respectively stating this. To address these challenges, some 84% of enterprise and 77% of mid-market organizations stated the most important area requiring support from Technology providers was "achieving cost efficiencies from our existing IT environment." "With this focus on achieving cost efficiencies, it's perhaps not surprising that virtualization dominates buyers thinking as the top trend impacting the technology industry over the next 5 years, with 69% of enterprise IT decision makers reinforcing this view. Virtualization can enable an organization to meet key IT initiatives without the need for significant infrastructure investment" concludes Ingledew.

고객 무중단 마이그레이션 사례 - VMware Storage VMotion & DataCore HA - Failsafe Migrations

Whilst recently on site at a large NHS Customer in the North of England, I gave some serious thought to the process of migrations from physical to virtual storage from an existing physical environment and the ramifications in the case of physical disk failure.

It occured to me that if you utilised VMWare's Storage VMotion and DataCore's High-Avaliability [HA] offering, it was possible to do a seamless, on the fly data migration from physical storage into a DataCore virtual volume, whilst remaining protected from physical disk failure at the destination.

It is often said that the most common time for a disk drive to fail is within 2 hours of being booted for the first time, and whilst 99% of us perform rigorous soak testing beforehand, there is still a chance that a disk will fail mid-migration and severely delay a project at the very least. At the very worst, it can potentially corrupt the data being transferred leading to a full recovery scenario.

If physical failure of the destination occured in this DataCore scenario, then the destination volume would merely switch over to it's highly available partner and the migration would continue seamlessly. A large reassurance in the case of this customer, whilst migrating mission critical, real time data in a 24-Hour environment.
